WHAT WE LOVE:

Jaquet Droz is a name associated with luxury watches and a rich history in clockmaking. The company was named after its founder, Pierre Jaquet-Droz, who was a pioneering watchmaker of the 18th century. He was born in 1721 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, which is still known today as one of the centres of Swiss watchmaking.

Pierre Jaquet-Droz excelled in creating intricate clocks, singing bird boxes, and automata—mechanical devices that were designed to mimic human and animal actions. Among his most famous creations were three automata: The Writer, The Draughtsman, and The Musician, which were considered marvels of their time due to their sophistication and lifelike movements. These automata could perform tasks that seemed almost miraculous for the period; for instance, The Writer could be programmed to write sentences with a quill.

Jaquet Droz, the company, capitalised on the fame of Pierre's creations and expanded its reputation by producing luxury watches that continued the tradition of exquisite craftsmanship and mechanical excellence. In the late 18th century, Jaquet Droz was also one of the first clockmakers to export to China and the watches became highly regarded by the Chinese Imperial Court.

The Grande Seconde Quantième by Jaquet Droz is a fine example of the brand's commitment to combining artistic design with watchmaking precision. The watch is part of the Grande Seconde collection, which itself is a homage to the 18th-century pocket watches created by Pierre Jaquet-Droz. The Grande Seconde models are characterized by the unique figure-eight configuration of their dials, a distinctive aesthetic that has become a signature of the brand.

The term "Quantième" refers to the date function in horology. Thus, the Grande Seconde Quantième models feature a complication that includes a date display, often using an elegant hand or aperture to indicate the date, enhancing the utility of the watch without sacrificing its sophisticated design.
