WHAT WE LOVE:
The Seiko 6105-8110, affectionately dubbed the “Captain Willard”, is one of the most historically significant and recognisable vintage dive watches ever made. Produced between 1970 and 1977, this reference gained widespread fame after appearing in Apocalypse Now, worn by the character Captain Benjamin Willard — hence the nickname.
But its legacy goes far beyond Hollywood. The 6105-8110 was issued to and favoured by U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War thanks to its legendary toughness and affordability. With its asymmetric cushion case, bold dial layout, and oversized locking crown at 4 o’clock, the design was both functional and instantly recognisable. The black matte dial features large tritium markers, luminous hands, and a framed date window at 3 o’clock. A bi-directional bezel with silver minute markings surrounds the dial, adding to its utilitarian vibe.
The large 44mm stainless steel case wears surprisingly well due to its short lugs and ergonomic design. It’s a watch that was purpose-built for military divers and adventure seekers — and it shows.
WHAT'S INSIDE:
Powering the 6105-8110 is Seiko’s Caliber 6105B, a 17-jewel automatic movement with hacking seconds, offering robust reliability and easy servicing. While it doesn’t hand-wind, it remains an impressively durable calibre that helped solidify Seiko’s reputation for reliable tool watches
