Jean-Louis Etienne is a French physician and polar explorer who, in April 2010, became the first person ever to fly solo over the Arctic Ocean in a hot-air balloon. He wore the El Primero Striking 10th on his wrist for the entire five-day journey — from Spitsbergen, Norway, across the frozen Arctic to the North Pole and beyond.

The watch itself is a striking object. The polished stainless steel case frames a silver sunray-brushed dial with contrasting anthracite sub-dials finished with fine circular guilloche texture. The signature element is the large red central chronograph hand — the famous 1/10th of a second indicator — which makes a single full revolution every ten seconds, giving it a rhythm unlike any other chronograph on the market.

Limited to just 500 numbered pieces worldwide, this is a watch that rewards knowing what it is — and what it has been through.

Powering this watch is the El Primero Calibre 4052 B — one of the most celebrated chronograph movements ever made. Running at 36,000 vibrations per hour (10 Hz), it beats significantly faster than most chronographs, which is what enables the iconic 1/10th of a second measurement. The movement comprises 326 components and 31 jewels, with a power reserve of approximately 50 hours. Serviced 2026.
