WHAT WE LOVE:
Steinhart is a German brand, Swiss-made, and one of the most consistently well-regarded names in the microbrand chronograph space — specifically because they have never tried to hide what they are inspired by, and have delivered genuinely strong specifications at their price point for well over a decade. The Ocean One Vintage Chronograph is their most characterful piece, and the Reverse Panda is the dial configuration that most collectors consider the stronger of the two.
The Reverse Panda places cream sub-dials on a deep black main dial. The contrast is immediate and striking, and the black background gives the cream-toned registers, the tachymeter-printed inner chapter ring, and the red crown accent a visual weight that the ivory-background version cannot quite match. The high-domed sapphire crystal — arguably the most distinctive design element on the watch — magnifies and deepens the dial, creating a three-dimensional effect that photographs consistently underrepresent and that only makes sense in person. The black aluminium tachymeter bezel insert and the partially polished, partially satin-finished steel case round out a composition that channels the design language of 1960s and early 1970s exotic-dial chronographs with considerable conviction.
At 42mm the Steinhart wears larger than the vintage references it draws from, but the proportions of the case — short lugs, downward curve, compact lug-to-lug — produce a watch that sits closer to the wrist than the 42mm diameter alone suggests. The screwed-down pushers and crown confirm the construction is serious, and the exhibition caseback makes the movement worth looking at.
WHAT'S INSIDE:
The Ocean One Vintage Chronograph is powered by the Dubois Dépraz DD2020 module mounted on the ETA 2824-2 TOP — a combination that produces a total jewel count of 51, against the 25 jewels of the base movement alone. The DD2020 is a Swiss-made automatic chronograph module that adds a genuine column-wheel mechanism to the 2824-2 base, providing the precise, clean pusher engagement that column-wheel architectures are specifically valued for.
