Grand Seiko has long been known for its finishing. The Zaratsu polishing technique — a hand-applied process that produces edges of almost impossible sharpness and mirror surfaces free of any distortion — is rare even within Japanese watchmaking, and the SBGH255G applies it to a case architecture that no other dive watch attempts. The result is a 46.9mm high-intensity titanium case that combines the visual refinement of a dress watch with the engineering of a saturation diving instrument. The contrast between the mirror-polished bevels and the brushed surfaces catches light in a way that is immediately distinctive, and unmistakably Grand Seiko.
The dial is extraordinary. The waffle-textured black iron construction — iron, not paint or lacquer — exists specifically to shield the movement from magnetic interference. The gold-tone surrounds on the applied indices and the warm gold printing complete a dial that manages to be both supremely functional and beautiful.
Engineered to ISO 6425 standards for saturation diving, finished to a level that most dress watches never reach, and designed by a craftsman who has been with Grand Seiko his entire career.
