The Kuroshio '64 is Citizen's tribute to one of the most significant moments in their own history — and the numbers woven into it are deliberate. The "64" refers to 1964, the year of the Tokyo Olympics, when Citizen produced a distinctive waterproof watch to mark Japan's moment on the world stage. The limited edition allocation of exactly 1,959 pieces references 1959, the year Citizen introduced the Parawater — their first truly waterproof watch and the direct ancestor of the Kuroshio line. Every number in this watch's name carries a story, and together they frame it as something more than a straightforward modern mechanical.
The gradient blue dial is the NK0009-82L's most immediate visual statement. The blue shifts from a lighter tone at the centre to a deeper, more saturated blue toward the edges — a gradation that evokes the colour change of open water as depth increases, entirely appropriate for a watch named after the Kuroshio Current, the powerful Pacific warm current that flows northeast along the Japanese coast. The dial surface is embossed with a pattern inspired by ocean waves, adding a subtle tactile and visual texture that becomes fully apparent under direct light and contributes genuine depth to the dial composition. Applied luminous hour markers and luminous hands ensure the maritime theme extends to genuine low-light legibility.
The 41mm stainless steel case with its combination of polished and brushed surfaces sits within a proportional bracelet that tapers cleanly toward the fold-over clasp, and the individually stamped serial number on the caseback confirms its limited edition status. Each of the 1,959 pieces is numbered. This example comes complete with its original box and papers.
