WHAT WE LOVE:
A rather interesting watch here, this is a rare Speedmaster Mark III housed inside a Seamaster case from the same era, often called the 'Jedi'. In the 1970's Omega, alongside the rest of the Swiss watch industry, were grappling with the quartz revolution that effectively outclassed any mechanical watchmaking within a few short years. The result was chaos as long-established brands threw what they could at the wall in hopes that something would stick, designing watches that pushed the limits of mechanical watches by packing in as many features as possible. Oddly enough, this brought Omega's two main models, the Speedmaster and the Seamaster, very close in terms of specifications, sharing near-identical dials, cases and using the same movements. Our example likely was the result of mismatches during manufacturing and the case is from a similar age Seamaster ref. 176.0005.
WHAT’S INSIDE:
The Mark III Speedmaster was quite the milestone watch for Omega, being the first automatic Speedy and used the calibre 1040, based on the Lemania 1340. Packed with features like both central chronograph second and minute hands, 44 hour power reserve, and a bidirectional winding rotor.
