Seiko 5 Speedtimer - 6139 Kanji Date Wheel

The Seiko 6139 is the subject of far better and more in depth writing than what I can provide here. Suffice it to say, it potentially can lay claim to being the first serially produced Automatic Chronograph introduced to the market, it also has a valuable connection to space travel through its connection with Colonel Pogue who wore his Seiko 6139 during his NASA Skylab 4 mission in 1973 on the opposite wrist to his NASA issued Omega Speedmaster Professional. Having worn the 6139 during his 6 month training prior to the space flight and his familiarity with the watch he brought it on board in the leg pocket of his space suit, a detail that wasn’t confirmed with certainty until 2007.

Seiko Catalogues from 1969 show the list price at $100 USD – Adjusted for inflation that brings the 2018 cost to $687.00 USD or approximately $1050. There aren’t too many iconic vintage watches from the late 60’s and 70’s that can be purchased for close to their original recommended retail price.

This is a Seiko 5 Variant features a lovely black and red ‘coke’ colour scheme around the tachymetre scale and also incorporates some very lovely orange accents. All functions working well, Chrono reliably resets to zero.
