WHAT WE LOVE:
The Seiko SUS GMT SCFF005, dating to 1997, is a distinctive expression of Seiko’s late-1990s design language, compact, purposeful and remarkably restrained. Its lugless 40mm case, fully integrated bracelet and understated GMT display give it a character that feels both unmistakably period-correct and surprisingly contemporary. The horizontally brushed upper surfaces contrast beautifully with the polished sides and bezel, while the integrated bracelet creates a cohesive, architectural silhouette.
The black dial is beautifully considered, featuring four applied metal markers at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, each paired with luminous inserts. The Seiko logo and “Automatic” text sit beneath 12, while a subtle red “S” adds a distinctive flash of colour. White luminous hour and minute hands are paired with a silver GMT hand featuring a cut-out design and luminous tip. Minute markings frame the dial, with a date aperture at 4 o’clock, while an inner rotating bezel displays the 24-hour scale with a combination of numerals and rectangular markers.
The details continue around the case, with both crowns positioned on the right side and a screwed transparent case back featuring a silver world-map motif — a fitting detail for a watch built around travel and multiple time zones. The fine, vintage-inspired bracelet links are finished with a Seiko-signed deploying clasp and security lock. For collectors, the SCFF005 is compelling for its distinctive design, mechanical GMT functionality and unmistakable 1990s Seiko character — an unusual and highly individual piece from an era of genuine design experimentation.
WHAT'S INSIDE;
Inside is the Seiko 4S12 automatic movement, a sophisticated calibre derived from the 52xx family introduced in the early 1970s. It features 25 jewels, operates at 28,000 bph, supports hand winding and hacking seconds, and is known for its reliability.
The GMT hand is mechanically coupled to the main hour hand, completing one rotation every 24 hours through an intermediate wheel. The dual time function is read against the inner rotating 24 hour bezel, which is manually positioned to correspond with the desired time zone.
