WHAT WE LOVE:
The Seiko 7A38-701B, affectionately known as the ‘Vulcan’, is an icon of early quartz chronograph innovation — and one of the finest examples of Seiko’s trailblazing engineering from the 1980s. Released in 1983, it houses the world’s first analog quartz chronograph movement with both day and date functions, all powered by the legendary 7A38 calibre.
Its 38mm stainless steel case is elegant yet functional, with distinctive angular lines and an integrated bracelet design that screams ‘80s industrial chic. The standout grey dial is matched with recessed sub-dials, giving the watch surprising depth and balance. Yellow hands for the chronograph seconds and sub-registers offer contrast and a technical, sporty feel. Topped with a flat Hardlex crystal, the watch’s low-profile silhouette sits comfortably on wrist while remaining visually bold.
WHAT'S INSIDE:
The in-house Seiko 7A38 quartz movement is a fully analog, 15-jewel chronograph movement with no plastic parts — a mechanical marvel in its own right. It features a 1/20 second chronograph with 60-minute and 1/10 second registers, running seconds, and a bilingual day-date display at 3 o'clock. The movement is serviceable and robust, which is rare for quartz chronographs of its era.
