WHAT WE LOVE:
The Seiko 6138-3002, affectionately known as the “Jumbo,” is one of the most iconic vintage chronographs from the golden age of Seiko mechanical watchmaking. With its bold case profile, vertically aligned dual registers, and utilitarian dial layout, it exudes a rugged charm that resonates deeply with collectors.
Released in the mid-1970s, the Jumbo stands out not only for its generous case size (especially for the era) but also for its historical significance. It houses Seiko’s in-house 6138 movement — an automatic column wheel chronograph with manual winding and a quickset day-date. The absence of a bezel allows the dial to breathe, giving the watch a commanding wrist presence without feeling overdone.
These early automatic chronographs mark an important chapter in Seiko’s evolution, and the 6138-3002 is one of the most wearable and collectible among them.
WHAT’S INSIDE:
The watch is powered by the Seiko Caliber 6138B — a 21-jewel automatic chronograph movement with column wheel and vertical clutch. It features manual winding, a day-date complication (in both English and Kanji on some examples), a 30-minute totaliser at 6 o’clock, and continuous seconds at 12. Power reserve is around 45 hours.
