WHAT WE LOVE:
The Seiko 6138-0010 "UFO" is the first reference in the 6138 series — the first model produced of a calibre that the collector community has come to recognise as one of the great watchmaking achievements of its era. The 6138 was designed as the successor to the 6139 (the world's first automatic chronograph), retaining the column-wheel architecture and vertical clutch that made the 6139 technically exceptional, and adding to it a second sub-dial: where the 6139 offered only a 30-minute counter, the 6138 added a 12-hour register, making it a genuinely more useful instrument for extended timing purposes. The 6138A movement in the 0010 reference — with its 21 jewels and automatic winding with hand-wind capability.
The "UFO" nickname derives from the case — a rounded, lug-less form with a large dial opening and a profile that collectors in Japan specifically characterised as resembling a flying saucer. The 0010 is the Speedtimer-signed JDM variant, sold only in the Japanese domestic market, and its "Water 70m Proof" dial text confirms this early production date. The black dial with its silver sub-dials at 12 and 6 o'clock, the yellow chronograph sweep, the teal/green minute markers, and the orange-red accents create a colour composition of extraordinary 1970s confidence.

The 6138-0010 is powered by Seiko Calibre 6138A — the first version of the 6138, a 21-jewel automatic chronograph with column wheel, vertical clutch, hand-wind capability, and two sub-registers at 12 and 6 o'clock. 21,600 vibrations per hour.
