WHAT WE LOVE:
The Seiko Sportsmatic Deluxe sits at an interesting juncture in the brand's history — produced in 1966, just three years before Seiko would release the world's first quartz wristwatch, at a moment when the Japanese watchmakers were producing some of their finest and most ambitious mechanical movements. The "Sportsmatic" designation identified Seiko's automatic sport-casual range, while the "Deluxe" suffix indicated an elevated specification: 25 jewels against the standard model's lower jewel count, Diashock protection — Seiko's proprietary shock-absorbing system — and the more elaborate case and dial treatment visible on this example.
The silver sunray surface radiates from the centre under direct light, and the applied indices — textured rectangular markers that catch light differently from the plain baton markers of the standard range — are a hallmark of the Deluxe designation. The coin-edge bezel with its fine radial texture creates a case that reads as considerably more substantial than its dimensions suggest, and the bracelet — period-correct — completes a presentation that is entirely consistent with how this watch was delivered in 1966.
