WHAT WE LOVE:
The Rolex Explorer I ref. 214270 holds a distinction that only became clear after the fact: it is the only Explorer in the model's history to be produced at 39mm. When Rolex introduced the 214270 in 2010, it was a response to a decade-long drift toward larger case sizes across the industry. When the reference was discontinued in 2021 and replaced by a new 36mm generation, it became clear that the 39mm Explorer existed in a precise window of time — and that the collectors who understood its proportions had been right all along.
This 2020 example is the MK2 dial generation, revised by Rolex in 2016 with longer hands and luminous Chromalight fill in the raised Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. The change addressed the one genuine criticism of the original 214270 — that the short hands left the outer portion of the dial visually unanchored — and the result is a dial that is more legible and more balanced. The black lacquer background, the applied Mercedes hands in 904L Oystersteel, and the clean smooth domed bezel give the Explorer its defining character.
At 39mm with a lug-to-lug of 47mm and a thickness of under 13mm, the 214270 is one of Rolex's most wearable references. It sits flat, disappears under a cuff, and works as readily in a formal context as it does on a mountain. The Oyster bracelet with its Easylink micro-adjustment and Oysterclasp deployant is the definitive metal bracelet in sport watchmaking, and on this watch it is exactly right.
WHAT'S INSIDE:
The 214270 is powered by Rolex's Calibre 3132 — a 31-jewel automatic movement beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a power reserve of 48 hours and Rolex's proprietary Paraflex shock absorbers, providing superior resistance to impact compared to standard Incabloc systems.
