WHAT WE LOVE:
Panerai introduced Carbotech to the world in 2015 with the Submersible PAM616 — and the material made such an immediate impression that extending it to the Luminor Marina 1950 was inevitable. The PAM00661 is the result: the quintessential Panerai case architecture, executed in a material that transforms both the visual and physical experience of wearing it.
Carbotech is a carbon composite produced by compressing layers of carbon fibre in a PEEK polymer matrix at extremely high temperatures and pressures. The process produces a material that is roughly 40% lighter than steel of equivalent volume, harder than titanium, hypoallergenic, and entirely impervious to corrosion.
On the wrist, the difference is immediately apparent. The 44mm Luminor 1950 case has always been a substantial presence — deliberately so, rooted in the professional diving instruments that Panerai produced for the Italian Navy's underwater commandos. In Carbotech, that presence is there in full, but the weight that accompanies it in steel is gone. The watch sits differently — lighter, more settled, less assertive. The iconic crown-protecting bridge, the cushion-shaped case, the sloped Carbotech bezel — all present, all precisely as they should be, but in a material that feels like a considered upgrade rather than a cosmetic variation.

The PAM00661 is powered by Panerai's in-house Calibre P.9010 — a movement developed and manufactured entirely at the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Comprising 200 components across 31 jewels, it beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a power reserve of 3 days (72 hours) via twin spring barrels.
