WHAT WE LOVE:
Orient is the watch industry's most persistently underestimated proposition, a Japanese manufacturer with full in-house movement production, a heritage stretching back to 1950, and a price point that sits below almost every Swiss and Japanese brand of comparable specification. The Kamasu is Orient's sport diver in the contemporary idiom: a 42mm cushion-adjacent case with a scalloped unidirectional rotating bezel, a black dial with full luminous coverage on the hands and markers, a hardlex-protected mineral crystal with a domed profile, and 200-metre water resistance. For a watch at this price, the Kamasu punches consistently above its weight, Orient's in-house movements are reliable, serviceable, and proven over decades of manufacture.
The Calibre F692 in the Kamasu is the movement that most demonstrates Orient's position: a Japanese-made automatic with 24 jewels, a proprietary quick-set day-date function, hand-winding capability, and manual time-setting by the seconds, all specifications that comparable Swiss movements at higher prices sometimes forgo. The red-tipped seconds hand visible at lower dial is the one accent in an otherwise conservative colour palette, providing the immediate visual confirmation that the watch is running without interrupting the black dial's professional character. This example comes on a Strapcode bracelet; its original bracelet is also included along with its box and papers.
