WHAT WE LOVE:
The Longines Admiral 5 Star carries a certification mark rather than a marketing designation — the five stars on the lower dial representing five independently verified quality standards: precision, reliability, anti-shock, anti-magnetic protection, and water resistance. Applied across the Admiral range from the early 1960s through the 1970s, the five-star standard placed these watches firmly above the general Longines production and into the brand's premium offering, and that standard extended to the finishing of the case, bracelet, and dial as much as the movement specification.
This blue dial variant is the more desirable of the two dial configurations in the Admiral 5 Star range. The deep midnight blue — with its subtle directional quality that shifts between navy and a warmer tone under different light conditions — pairs with the original stainless steel Milanese mesh bracelet in a combination that has aged considerably better than many of the tool-style bracelets of its era. The Milanese mesh is neither a riveted sports bracelet nor a simple link bracelet; it is the more refined option, its fine weave pattern giving the watch a dress character that the Admiral's five-star brief fully supports. The applied silver-tone baton markers, the winged hourglass Longines logo at upper centre with "automatic" in the italic script of this production period, the "★★★★★ ADMIRAL" designation at lower centre, and the single date window at 3 o'clock are all correctly signed and clearly legible.
