WHAT WE LOVE:

The IWC Spitfire carries a design lineage that traces directly to the Mark XI — the watch IWC developed for the British Royal Air Force in 1948 and which remained in airborne service until 1981. The IW326801 is the most direct descendant of that brief: at 39mm it is smaller and more faithful to the Mark XI's proportions than the Mark XVIII it ran alongside, and crucially it is the first watch in IWC's pilot range to carry an IWC-manufactured movement from the new 32000 calibre family, replacing the previous ETA-based architecture with genuine in-house engineering. The matte black dial with its propeller-shaped rhodium-plated hands, warm-toned lume on selected markers, and "Spitfire" text in red below centre creates a composition that is properly serious without announcing itself — the design language of a working instrument rather than a collector's piece.

Two details make the IW326801 particularly compelling to own. The soft-iron inner cage — an IWC tradition inherited from the Mark XI — protects the movement from magnetic interference in a way that the silicon hairspring solutions of other manufacturers do not replicate, and the crystal is secured against displacement by low air pressure in accordance with actual aviation requirements. This example has been recently serviced by IWC directly in 2025, and comes with its original box and papers plus an IWC leather strap.

WHAT’S INSIDE:

The IW326801 is powered by IWC Manufacture Calibre 32110 — a 21-jewel in-house automatic movement beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a 72-hour power reserve. The Calibre 32110 features a Glucydur balance, Nivarox hairspring, Incabloc shock absorber, and bipartite index fine adjustment — the complete specification of a well-engineered manufacture movement. The Spitfire caseback is engraved with the aircraft silhouette. Water resistance is rated to 60 metres.
