Released in 2020 to mark the 55th anniversary of the very first Grand Seiko quartz watch, the SBGP017 combines elevated case design with one of the most accurate quartz movements ever made. This limited edition of 2,500 pieces captures the quiet strength of Grand Seiko’s design language — and expresses it through meticulous finishing, symmetry, and a dial that’s rich in detail.
The SBGP017 has the nicknamed "Sea of Clouds" dial as it takes its name and texture from the meteorological phenomenon that occurs on still winter mornings above the Shinshu region — the home of Grand Seiko's quartz watchmaking. When humidity is high and the air is calm, dense cumulus clouds gather above the lowlands and stretch to the horizon in every direction, tinged at their surface by the blue of the clear sky above. A blued steel seconds hand and a deep blue applied "GS" emblem at 12 o'clock complete the composition. A five-pointed star at 6 o'clock — Grand Seiko's symbol for exceptional accuracy — is the final, knowing touch.
WHAT'S INSIDE:
Inside is the Grand Seiko Caliber 9F85, a high-accuracy quartz movement adjusted to an astonishing ±5 seconds per year. It features backlash auto-adjustment for the seconds hand, instant date change, temperature compensation, and independent hour hand adjustment — offering the convenience of quartz with the refinement and finishing usually reserved for high-end mechanicals.
