WHAT WE LOVE:

Grand Seiko, the flagship line for the brand was shelved in the late 1970s as the brand effectively declared victory over the Swiss watch industry. Their reliable quartz technology and their ability to produce it at scale cheaply had caused a huge amount of turmoil in Switzerland as their mechanical movements were on the brink of being made totally obsolete.

Time would prove the enduring appeal of traditional Swiss watchmaking as these manufacturers began to embrace their new identities as purveyors of ‘Luxury' rather than just being the finest engineers of tools for professionals.

In the late 1980s Seiko decided to revive the Grand Seiko moniker, and in so doing began the development of what would be their finest quartz movement to date. Ultrathin, ultra-accurate and in a totally airtight module, the movement was designed to require servicing at 50-year intervals. This calibre set the standard that Grand Seiko continues to follow, and this revolutionary movement is also one of the cheapest ways into Grand Seiko ownership.
