WHAT WE LOVE:
Farer is a London-based independent that has built its reputation on a simple but rarely executed idea: take genuinely well-specified Swiss movements, house them in beautifully finished cases, and apply colour and character with real confidence rather than caution. The Segrave Chronograph Automatic is one of three sibling chronographs the brand released together — alongside the Cobb and the Eldridge — each named for a pioneering land or speed record holder, and each with its own distinct dial personality. The Segrave, named for Sir Henry Segrave, the first person to hold the world land and water speed records simultaneously, is the most reserved and arguably the most elegant of the three.
The black dial with its two white sub-dials gives the Segrave what reviewers have called a "reversed panda" aesthetic. Look closer and the detail multiplies: the sub-dial outer tracks are graduated from light to dark grey, the applied indices are arranged in lumed pairs at five-minute intervals, and the tachymeter scale on the chapter ring is printed in blue. The hands are where Farer's signature playfulness comes through fully — the 30-minute counter hand carries a black base with an orange tip, the small seconds hand at 3 o'clock runs in green, and the central chronograph hand sweeps in vivid orange. Against the monochrome dial, these accents read confidently in colour.
The 39mm stainless steel case is finished with recessed, micro-blasted sections running the full length of the lugs — a textural detail few brands at this price point bother with — beneath a heavy polished bezel and a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. Limited to just 100 pieces, the Segrave is a genuinely characterful, well-specified chronograph from a brand that has consistently punched above its price category.
WHAT’S INSIDE:
The Segrave Chronograph Automatic is powered by the ETA 2894-2 in Elaboré grade — a 37-jewel automatic movement beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a power reserve of 42 hours. The 2894-2 is one of the most respected automatic chronograph movements available, valued for combining genuine column-wheel-adjacent performance with the reliability and serviceability that has made ETA's movement family the backbone of independent watchmaking for decades.
