WHAT WE LOVE:

The Citizen Cosmotron is Japan's answer to the Bulova Accutron — a battery-powered tuning fork movement that Citizen developed independently to compete with the revolutionary electronic technology that the American company had introduced in 1960. Where Bulova licensed their technology carefully, Citizen built their own: the Cosmotron calibre family, introduced in the late 1960s, used a tuning fork vibrating at 300Hz driven by a transistor and battery circuit to produce the same smooth, continuous seconds hand glide that identified tuning fork movements by sight. The two-pronged tuning fork at the heart of the movement vibrates 300 times per second, and each vibration advances the seconds hand by one tiny step — so small and so rapid that the motion appears continuous rather than stepped to the human eye.

The green dial on this example is one of the more striking dial configurations in the Cosmotron range — a radial-brushed surface that shifts from a deeper green at the outer edge to a lighter, almost jade tone toward the centre, with applied gold-tone baton markers and the period-correct "CQ" tuning fork emblem at lower centre. The day-date double window at 3 o'clock, the cushion-adjacent case shape, and the bold 1970s case proportions give the watch an architectural confidence that is very much of its era. On the brown leather strap shown, the Cosmotron reads as a distinguished piece of early 1970s Japanese electronic watchmaking that very few collectors have discovered.

WHAT'S INSIDE:

The Cosmotron is powered by Citizen Calibre 7803 — an electronic tuning fork movement operating at 300Hz, battery-powered, with a continuous-glide seconds display that distinguishes it from both mechanical and quartz movements by sight.
