WHAT WE LOVE:
The Cartier Santos is the oldest named wristwatch in the world — designed by Louis Cartier in 1904 for Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Brazilian aviator who needed to read the time during flight without taking his hands from the controls. The green dial WSSA0062, unveiled at Watches and Wonders 2023, is the most discussed Santos configuration of recent years: the graduated green dial — sunbrushed and shifting from a lighter tone at the centre to a richer, deeper green at the edges — introduced a colour that Cartier's competitors had been exploring but that no one had applied to the Santos before.
The large 39.8mm case carries all the Santos's defining architecture unchanged from the 2018 relaunch: the exposed screws at the bezel, the square case with its rounded corners and floating inner bezel, the seven-sided crown set with a synthetic blue spinel, and the QuickSwitch interchangeable strap system — one of the most intelligently designed bracelet-to-strap interchange mechanisms in the industry. Against the green dial, the polished steel Roman numeral hour markers, the white railroad minute track, and the sword-shaped rhodium-finished hands filled with green Super-LumiNova create a composition that reads as simultaneously historical and entirely contemporary. The green alligator strap included alongside the steel bracelet transforms the character of the watch completely — from architectural sport-dress to confident, colourful daily wear.
