WHAT WE LOVE:
The Panthère de Cartier was designed in the 1980s as one of the first watches conceived simultaneously as a timepiece and as a jewellery bracelet — a watch whose bracelet was not an afterthought to the case but the design's primary proposal. The distinctive supple-link construction of the Panthère bracelet, with its interlocking rounded rectangular links that articulate freely in multiple directions to follow the wrist's movement like a fabric, was a genuinely new proposition in fine watchmaking when Cartier launched it. That bracelet design — which connects to Cartier's long history of producing jewellery bracelets under the same Panthère name — is the feature that has made the Panthère enduringly popular across four decades of production and revivals.
The medium case configuration of this Ref. 183957 — 27mm × 37mm in the characteristic square-cornered cushion shape with its polished surfaces — sits between the small and large Panthère cases in a proportion that is the most versatile for a broad range of wrist sizes. The two-tone configuration, with the stainless steel case body and 18k yellow gold bezel and bracelet links alternating in the Panthère's characteristic interlocking pattern, creates the warm colour combination that defined the 1980s luxury watch aesthetic at its most confident. The silvered dial with its Roman numerals — Cartier's signature hour index format, used consistently across the Santos, Tank, and Panthère families — and the blued-steel sword-shaped hands and synthetic blue spinel crown cabochon are all original period details. The date aperture at 3 o'clock is present on this configuration. Comes as full set with box and papers.
