WHAT WE LOVE:

The Breitling Colt has one of the more genuinely purposeful backstories in the sport watch category. Developed originally for the armed forces in the 1980s, it was designed around a specific set of requirements: legible in all conditions, robust enough to withstand military exercises, and dependable enough that no one would have to think twice about wearing it in the field.

Breitling's blue dials have always sat slightly apart from the industry standard — less navy, more mid-blue, with a depth and consistency that makes the luminous applied index markers and the silver-tone red-tipped seconds hand read with exceptional clarity in all light conditions. The Arabic numeral at 12 o'clock — a Colt signature from its earliest references — gives the dial a purposeful, instrument-like character that the purely index variants never quite replicate. The unidirectional rotating bezel with its ratcheted action and four raised 15-minute markers provides a practical elapsed-time reference, and the overall composition is immediately readable in the way that working watches should be.

The 41mm case with its extra-wide bezel and raised crystal riders — the design feature originally specified to protect the crystal during military exercises — sits well on a broad range of wrist sizes and the mixed brushed and polished surfaces give it a considered finish quality appropriate to the Breitling name.

The screw-locked crown with its double-gasket seal and the screwed-in caseback contribute to a water resistance rating of 200 metres — serious depth capability that maintains the Colt's credentials as a genuine tool watch. The sapphire crystal is glareproofed on both sides, providing excellent legibility under direct sunlight.

The A17313 is powered by Breitling's Calibre 17 — a 25-jewel automatic movement beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a power reserve of approximately 38 hours.  The Calibre 17 is built on the proven ETA 2824-2 platform, modified and regulated by Breitling to their own chronometer standard, and has established a strong reputation for reliability and long serviceability in everyday and active use.
