WHAT WE LOVE:
Before Arnold Schwarzenegger made the Seiko H558 famous on screen, Seiko had already laid the groundwork for ana-digi greatness with the H556-5020. Produced in the early 1980s, this Seiko Sports 100 Alarm Chronograph blends digital functionality with analog display in a way that was cutting-edge for its time and now feels quintessentially retro.
Nicknamed the “Pre-Arnie”, this reference offers a subtle military-inspired design, featuring a 42mm stainless steel case. The matte black dial hosts analog hands alongside a small digital display window at the bottom — used for setting the alarm, viewing a second time zone, using the chronograph, and reading the digital time.
The unidirectional dive bezel and 100m water resistance add genuine tool-watch utility, while the monocoque (one-piece) case construction ensures durability. With its brushed finish, tucked crown, and pushers, the watch sits low on the wrist and feels more compact than its size might suggest.
WHAT'S INSIDE:
Powering the H556-5020 is the Seiko H556 quartz module, part of the brand’s early ana-digi innovation. The movement features analog timekeeping, digital alarm, stopwatch, and calendar functions, all operated through the side pushers. It’s powered by a standard battery and known for long-term reliability.
