WHAT WE LOVE:
It only takes one rule-breaker with a bright spark of inspiration to change the course of history.
Grandson of the founder of the legendary Porsche car company, Ferdinand "Butzi" Porsche kicked his career off with a bang when his first major design work was shown to the public in 1963 - it was the first Porsche 911. A decade later, Butzi struck it out on his own by starting his own industrial design studio, Porsche Design. His first product, a watch unlike any other. Named simply the "Chronograph 1", and built by high-end Swiss watchmaker Orfina, this timepiece was the very first in history to come in an all-black colourway.
Inspired by the dashboard gauges of his family's cars, the Chronograph 1 is a super legible and remarkably robust watch, elegant in its modernist design style. Initially available with the then-new Valjoux 7750, the calibre was changed to the vaunted Lemania 5100 automatic, the latter being the choice of several Air Force squadrons. These days, the Chrono 1 has become the watch of choice for legends like Tom Cruise, Mario Andretti, and Magnus Walker, and continues to look and feel striking almost half a century on from its inception.
The Chronograph 1 we have here is in excellent condition, having recently had a full movement overhaul, and includes several spare bracelet links.
