WHAT WE LOVE:
The movement in this watch was developed in secret, cloaked in corporate espionage so that the Swiss could outfox their Japanese counterparts by unveiling a movement that would revolutionise watchmaking. They succeeded in keeping the movement a secret, and it was released to great fanfare in 1972 but it was not the body blow against Quartz movements that the Swiss so desperately needed. Consequently, the tuning fork movement has become a peculiarity of watchmaking now, the technology that had its time come sooner might have been the dominant one in watches today.
This Omega Speedsonic uses the only Tuning Fork movement that also incorporates a chronograph function and was produced in relatively few numbers, fewer of which exist today. This example has just returned from Texas where one of the worlds most eminent experts in Tuning Fork movements has just carried out a full service.
