The tourbillon, a mechanical watch complication invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1795, was initially developed to improve the accuracy of pocket watches by compensating for positional errors caused by the effects of gravity. It's essentially a rotating cage that houses the escapement and balance wheel, completing a full rotation typically once every 60 seconds, thus averaging out gravitational errors.

For a very long time, the tourbillon was one of the most challenging complications to manufacture, requiring a great deal of expertise, precision, and craftsmanship. As such, watches with tourbillons were extremely expensive and reserved for elite collectors.

Historically, crafting this complication demanded high expertise. However, technological advances, including computer-aided design and CNC machining, simplified its precision manufacturing. Furthermore, the rise of watchmaking in regions like China introduced more affordable tourbillon options. While these may not match the Swiss standards of quality, they expanded the tourbillon's accessibility.
