WHAT WE LOVE:
Affectionately known as the “Orange Sumo”, the Seiko SBDC005 brings together the rugged appeal of Seiko’s professional diver lineup with a dial that’s anything but subtle. Released around 2013, this reference quickly gained a following for its vibrant colour, serious dive specs, and unbeatable value for money.
The standout feature is its bright orange dial, paired with large, highly legible LumiBrite-filled indices and hands, including the signature arrow-style hour hand and sword-shaped minute hand. A date window sits cleanly at 3 o’clock. The unidirectional dive bezel has a black insert with silver markers and a 60-minute countdown scale.
The “Sumo” nickname comes from the watch’s cushioned 44mm case, which, despite its size, wears comfortably thanks to its short lugs. The overall finish — with brushed and polished surfaces — is far above what you’d expect at this price point.
WHAT'S INSIDE:
Powering the watch is the Seiko Caliber 6R15, a mid-tier automatic movement offering 50 hours of power reserve, hacking, and hand-winding. It's housed behind a solid caseback with a stylised wave motif, adding a touch of heritage appeal.
