WHAT WE LOVE:
The Seiko 6138-8020 "Golden Panda" Chronograph is one of the most beloved vintage chronographs, renowned for its timeless design and pioneering movement. Released in the 1970s, this model belongs to Seiko’s legendary 6138 series, which was among the first fully integrated automatic chronographs, solidifying Seiko’s reputation for innovation in watchmaking.
Housed in a 40mm stainless steel case, the 6138-8020 is instantly recognisable for its gold case and black dial. This classic layout, favoured by collectors, enhances readability while exuding a sporty look. The dial is further refined with applied hour markers, slim baton hands, and a day-date complication at 3 o’clock, often found in both English and Kanji. A tachymeter scale along the outer rim adds a functional tool-watch element, reinforcing its racing chronograph roots.
WHAT'S INSIDE:
Powering the watch is the Seiko Caliber 6138, a column-wheel, vertical-clutch automatic chronograph movement that offers smooth operation and precise timekeeping. Unlike its predecessor, the 6139, this movement features a dual-register chronograph with a 30-minute counter and a 12-hour totaliser, making it even more practical for timing long intervals. Additionally, it supports manual winding and a quickset day-date function, a rarity for automatic chronographs of its era.
