The Rolex Daytona is a mechanical chronograph wristwatch designed to meet the needs of racing drivers by measuring elapsed time and calculating average speed. Its name refers to Daytona, Florida, where racing flourished in the early 20th century. It has been manufactured by Rolex since 1963 in three distinct generations (or series); the second series was introduced in 1988, and the third in 2000. While cosmetically similar, the second series introduced a self-winding movement (the first series is hand-wound), and the third series brought manufacture of the movement in-house to Rolex.

The Rolex Daytona was inspired by racecar drivers and enthusiasts, most notably, iconic actor Paul Newman, who reportedly wore his Daytona every day after he was gifted one by his wife. Newman typically wore it on a leather military strap, and was photographed wearing it in this fashion for the 1972 book Paul Newman - Les images d'une vie. 

The first Rolex Daytona, the Reference 6239, was introduced in 1963. It was powered by a manual-winding Valjoux Calibre 72 movement and featured a black dial with three subdials for the hours, minutes, and seconds. The watch was an instant success with racecar drivers and enthusiasts, and it quickly became one of Rolex's most popular models.

In 1965, Rolex introduced the Reference 6240, which featured a new dial design with a white background and "exotic" subdials. This dial design became one of the most iconic features of the Rolex Daytona, and it is still used on some models today.

In 1988, Rolex introduced the second generation of the Daytona, the Reference 16520. This model featured a self-winding movement and a new case design. The Reference 16520 was a major improvement over the original Daytona, and it quickly became the most popular model in the lineup.

In 2000, Rolex introduced the third generation of the Daytona, the Reference 116520. This model featured a new movement, the Caliber 4130, which was developed entirely in-house by Rolex. The Caliber 4130 is a highly advanced movement that is COSC-certified and has a power reserve of 72 hours.
