WHAT WE LOVE:

The SLGW003G represents Grand Seiko doing something they had not done in over fifty years: producing a hand-wound high-beat mechanical movement. The Calibre 9SA4 is only the third movement in the 9SA platform family — after the automatic 9SA5 that launched the Evolution 9 Collection in 2020 and the Tentagraph 9SC5 chronograph — and it is the one that connects most directly to Grand Seiko's origins. In the 1960s and 1970s, the brand's finest movements were hand-wound, beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, adjusted across multiple positions for precision that automatic winding complicated.

The dial is Grand Seiko's "Birch Bark" texture — a surface pattern inspired by the intricate, layered bark of the white birch trees surrounding the Shinshu Watch Studio. It is carved from the dial blank itself, not printed or applied, and the resulting texture catches light at every angle differently from its neighbour. The Brilliant Hard Titanium case — a Grand Seiko proprietary alloy that achieves twice the hardness of conventional stainless steel while maintaining titanium's lightness — carries the Evolution 9 architecture at 38.6mm and 9.95mm thickness.

The SLGW003G is powered by Grand Seiko Calibre 9SA4 — a 47-jewel manual-wind mechanical movement beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour (10 beats per second), with an 80-hour power reserve delivered via twin mainspring barrels. The Dual Impulse Escapement reduces friction at the escapement contact point, improving efficiency over conventional Swiss lever escapements. A free-sprung balance with overcoil hairspring ensures rate stability across positions and temperature variation. The power reserve indicator is displayed on the caseback.
