Without a doubt, the Italian city of Florence, or Firenze in the native tongue, is one of the most important locations in Europe, being the birthplace of the Renaissance on the continent, among many other historic achievements. It was here in 1860 that Giovanni Panerai opened a watch shop and watchmaking centre, on the Ponte alle Grazie bridge that crossed the River Arno. From here, the Panerai brand was born, first becoming designers for military-issued timing devices, then pivoting to a high-end luxury watch brand. The rest, as they say, is history.
