The Cartier Tank is one of the most significant watch designs in history — not just in watchmaking, but in design broadly. When Louis Cartier introduced the first Tank in 1917, inspired by the aerial view of Renault FT tanks advancing across the Western Front, he created a case architecture that has never required reinvention. More than a century later, the rectangular case with its parallel brancards extending from the case to form the lugs remains as identifiable and as contemporary as it was when it first appeared.
The Tank Must is the point at which the Tank becomes genuinely accessible. Launched in the 1970s as a more affordable entry into the Tank family and relaunched in 2021 for the modern market, it makes no compromises in the essentials: the stainless steel case is immaculate, the dial architecture is purely Cartier, and the details — the blued-steel sword hands, the silvered Roman numeral dial, the beaded crown set with a blue synthetic spinel cabochon — are identical in spirit and execution to the Tank Louis Cartier that sits significantly further up the range.
At 33.7x25.5mm and just 6.6mm thick, the WSTA0041 is one of the most elegant things you can put on a wrist. It disappears under a cuff, sits completely flat, and does nothing to draw attention to itself beyond the quiet authority that the Tank silhouette has always carried. The interchangeable black grained calfskin strap with its steel ardillon buckle fits the watch without interrupting its geometry. This is an object of considered design that happens to tell the time — and in that, it is entirely consistent with everything Cartier has been doing since 1847. This example is complete with its original box and papers from 2023.
