WHAT WE LOVE:
The Rolex Daytona Ref. 6265 is one of the most coveted vintage chronographs ever made, representing the final evolution of the hand-wound, manually wound Daytona before the switch to automatic movements. Produced in 1973, this example carries with it not only the hallmarks of a transitional era in Rolex chronograph history — but also the provenance of having remained within a single family since new, serviced exclusively by Rolex throughout its life.
Fitted with its original MK1 black Sigma dial, it’s a textbook early variant. The tritium lume plots have aged gracefully and no longer glow under natural light — only under UV light. The stainless steel case remains sharp with defined edges, showing signs of minor polishing by Rolex in past services, while the caseback is correctly stamped 6265, and the case itself features a 6263 stamp — not uncommon for this period as they were interchangable.
The screw-down MK3 pushers and replacement hour and minute hands reflect the watch’s service journey, while a new Rolex plexiglass and later 78350 Oyster bracelet from 1999 are updates that were required due to the watch's age and natural wear.
For collectors, this ticks all the boxes.
WHAT'S INSIDE:
Inside is the manually-wound Valjoux 727 — the legendary column-wheel chronograph movement that powered many of Rolex’s most celebrated Daytonas. Renowned for its robust construction and precision, the Cal. 727 operates at 21,600 vph and features a 48-hour power reserve. It is regarded as one of the finest manual chronograph calibres of its era. Last official service by Rolex completed in 2015 and it is currently running at -3 seconds per day with a strong amplitude.
