WHAT WE LOVE:

The Tudor Ranger's lineage runs back to the British North Greenland Expedition of the 1950s, when Tudor Oyster Prince watches accompanied scientists and surveyors into genuinely hostile Arctic conditions. When Tudor revived the Ranger in 2022, it was a welcome return — but at 39mm, it sat slightly outside the proportions that defined the original expedition watches, which were built compact and unassuming, designed to disappear under a sleeve until the moment they were actually needed. The new 36mm Ranger, introduced at Dubai Watch Week in late 2025, is Tudor correcting course — and getting it right.

At 11mm thick, the new 36mm case achieves something the larger 39mm version couldn't: proportions that feel genuinely correct for a field watch rather than merely smaller. Tudor didn't simply shrink the case and accept a chunkier profile — they reduced the thickness specifically to maintain the right relationship between diameter and height, a level of care that this category of watch doesn't always receive. The fully brushed 316L stainless steel case carries no polished surfaces to catch unwanted glare in the field, the domed sapphire crystal and screw-down crown are both retained from the larger reference, and the 100-metre water resistance gives genuine confidence for active use.

The matte black dial is the Ranger at its most classic — cream-toned luminous Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9, and 12, paired with Tudor's signature burgundy-tipped seconds hand, a small detail that adds a single considered point of colour without disrupting the dial's restraint. Against the brushed steel case, the overall effect is unmistakably tool-watch in character: anonymous, purposeful, built for actual use rather than display.

WHAT’S INSIDE:

The 79930 is powered by Tudor's Manufacture Calibre MT5400 — an in-house automatic movement developed specifically for the 36mm Ranger case, COSC chronometer certified and regulated by Tudor beyond the standard COSC requirement to a tighter accuracy specification. The 70-hour reserve is a genuinely difficult specification to match at this price point, and reflects Tudor's consistent strategy of building manufacture movements that meaningfully outperform their category.
