WHAT WE LOVE:
In November 1973, NASA Astronaut Colonel William Pogue smuggled his personal Seiko 6139 chronograph aboard Skylab 4 — hidden in his flight suit, concealed from mission controllers who hadn't authorised it. He trusted it more than his official Omega Speedmaster for timing engine burns, because he knew it better. When mission control discovered it was aboard, the resulting reprimand made it into the mission logs. The watch made it into history: the first automatic chronograph worn in space, and the unlikely origin of one of the most celebrated collector nicknames in vintage watchmaking.
All yellow-dialled 6139s carry the "Pogue" nickname today, and the butterscotch gold dial with its fading "Pepsi" blue/red bezel and inner chapter ring is among the most characterful and instantly recognisable vintage watch configurations available at any price. The photo shows exactly the kind of natural dial oxidation — the warm amber deepening toward the edges — that confirms originality and decades of light exposure. The case at 41mm with the Pepsi bezel, the day-date at 3 o'clock, and the 30-minute chronograph sub-register at 6 create a dial composition that is busy in exactly the right way. Included in this set is its box, papers, and manual.
WHAT'S INSIDE:
The 6139-6012 is powered by the Seiko Calibre 6139 — a 17-jewel automatic movement with vertical clutch and column wheel, making it the world's first automatic chronograph with integrated vertical clutch architecture. The movement beats at 21,600 vph and drives a 30-minute chronograph counter at 6 o'clock alongside the day-date complication at 3.
