Introduced at the end of 1969 as a complete redesign of Seiko's earlier 6217 GMT — itself created for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics — the 6117-6400 represents Seiko's most fully resolved take on the world timer concept.
An independent red GMT hand makes one complete rotation of the dial every 24 hours — moving at half the speed of the hour hand — and works in coordination with an inner rotating city bezel listing major time zones around the world. Set the bezel to align your home city with the red hand, and the time in any other listed city can be read instantly without calculation. The crown's three positions add to the watch's functional depth: in its normal depressed position it controls the rotating inner bezel, at half-extension it sets the date, and fully extended it sets the time — a design that reflects considerable thought about how the watch would actually be used.
The case at 41.5mm x 45mm carries genuine vintage tonneau-shaped presence, with a flush-set crown that keeps the profile clean. This generation introduced an upgraded movement with hacking seconds — a refinement over the earlier 6217 — alongside a new dial finish, new hands, and an updated bezel design.
