WHAT WE LOVE:
The Rolex Explorer I ref. 214270 is the only 39mm Explorer Rolex has ever produced — introduced at Baselworld 2010, discontinued in 2021 when Rolex replaced it with the 36mm ref. 124270. That specific combination of case size and discontinued status has made the 214270, particularly in its Mark II dial configuration, one of the most actively collected modern Rolex references on the secondary market. The 39mm case is widely considered the sweet spot between the 36mm's smaller-wrist heritage and the 41mm's contemporary dominance — large enough for immediate modern legibility, small enough for genuine cuff clearance, and entirely correct for the Explorer's proposition as a tool watch built for actual use.
The Mark II distinction is the detail that separates 2016 and later 214270 production from the 2010–2015 Mark I examples: the MK II introduces longer hands with more luminous fill, and — most visibly — full Chromalight Super-LumiNova on the 3, 9, and 6 o'clock Arabic numerals. Where the MK I carried lighter numerals against the black dial, the MK II's full lume numerals create a dial that reads with exceptional clarity in both direct light and darkness, the Chromalight glowing a long-lasting blue rather than the green of Super-LumiNova. The 2020 example presented here is final-year production of the 214270 — warranty-card evidence of the watch's position at the very end of the reference's production run, before Rolex retired 39mm from the Explorer entirely. The polished bezel, the smooth domed surface, the 100-metre water resistance through the Twinlock crown, and the Oyster bracelet with Easylink are all correct to the reference's specification.
