WHAT WE LOVE:
The Speedmaster Date ref. 3513.50 occupies a specific and valuable position in the Speedmaster family — the automatic, date-equipped, sapphire-crystal variant that sat alongside the hand-wound Professional Moonwatch for nearly two decades as the everyday-wear alternative. Where the Moonwatch is defined by its NASA heritage, its hesalite crystal, and its hand-winding requirement, the 3513.50 is defined by its practical accessibility: self-winding automatic movement, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, and the date function at 3 o'clock that the Professional Moonwatch deliberately omits.
The black dial with its applied silver markers, the three-register chronograph layout showing the characteristic Speedmaster dial architecture, and the fixed black tachymeter bezel are all inherited from the Moonwatch's design language — but at 39mm rather than 42mm, and with the sapphire crystal giving the watch a visually cleaner, more modern character. The Calibre 1152 inside — based on the ETA/Valjoux 7750 architecture — is one of the most serviceable and reliable automatic chronograph movements of the period, and the three-register layout presents the chronograph functions in a way that is immediately legible without requiring consultation of a manual. On the steel bracelet with its brushed and polished links, the 3513.50 wears as a confident daily chronograph that carries the Speedmaster name with genuine mechanical credibility.
