WHAT WE LOVE:
The Omega Genève Dynamic is one of the genuine design achievements of 1970s Swiss watchmaking — a watch conceived for the Prix de Ville de Genève in 1965, released commercially in 1967, and produced across a remarkable range of twenty-four dial colour combinations that made it the most personalised mass-produced watch in the Omega catalogue of its decade. The Dynamic's defining physical characteristic is the elliptical "Unishell" case, designed by Italian casemaker Fernando Fontana: an ergonomic oval form modelled to follow the anatomy of the wrist, with the case opening from the dial side rather than the caseback. The crown is set flush into the case band, eliminating any projection from the elliptical profile — a construction that required the crown mechanism to operate at a right angle to the conventional configuration and that was, at the time of launch, a genuinely novel engineering decision.
The ref. 166.039 is the automatic date variant — the Calibre 565 providing self-winding convenience alongside the quickset date aperture at 3 o'clock. At 41mm × 36mm the elliptical case reads large by 1970s standards but wears with a comfort that the form's wrist-following geometry delivers.
