Longines has been connected to aviation since the 1910s — supplying onboard chronographs, timing instruments, and pilots' watches across nearly a century of airborne history, including instruments used on Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic crossing. The Avigation BigEye is not an approximate reference to that heritage; it is a direct reconstruction of a specific historical Longines chronograph from their archives, reissued with updated movement technology and the same essential dial architecture.
The "BigEye" name comes from the most immediately striking feature of the dial: the oversized minute counter sub-dial at 3 o'clock, substantially larger than the other two registers and divided into ten segments every three minutes — a timing interval that references specific aviation applications for which the original was designed. The asymmetric three-register layout that results from this oversized minute counter is unlike any other chronograph dial currently in production, and it creates the impression of a face with one very large eye — hence the name. The matte black dial with its large Arabic numeral hour markers, luminous silver hands, and period-correct typography connects directly to the 1930s and 1940s instrument watches that the Avigation draws from, while the 66-hour power reserve of the Calibre L688.2 brings the movement specification firmly into the present. On the brown crocodile leather strap, this reads as exactly what it is — a genuinely historically grounded pilot's chronograph, properly made.

Powered by the Longines Calibre L688.2 — a self-winding automatic chronograph movement beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a 66-hour power reserve. The movement drives the asymmetric three-register layout: central 60-second chronograph hand, oversized 30-minute counter at 3 o'clock, and 12-hour counter at 9 o'clock, with running seconds at 6. The sapphire crystal with multiple layers of anti-reflective coating on the underside provides scratch resistance without the reflective interference that uncoated crystals produce on dark dials.
