WHAT WE LOVE:
Isotope is a London-based independent watch brand that has, in a very short period of time, developed one of the most distinctive and loyal followings in the micro-brand space. Their method is consistent: take a single case design of genuine quality and interest, and use colour and concept to give each edition a personality that the hardware alone cannot carry. The HydriumX "The Judge" is the most striking execution of that approach the brand has produced.
The concept is drawn from the traditional dress of British judges — centuries of ceremonial authority expressed in three colours: black, white, and red. On this watch those colours are applied with the same directness. The micro-blasted matte black dial carries bold white Arabic numerals filled with Swiss Super-LumiNova, and the Isotope "Lacrima" (teardrop) hands appear in red, also outlined in luminous material. The red sapphire bezel insert — unmarked except for a single white Lacrima Isotope logo at 12 o'clock — is the detail that makes the whole composition work.
The HydriumX case is worth describing specifically because it is unusual. The 40mm micro-blasted stainless steel case sits high, with pronounced rounded lugs that curve down into the wrist and produce a fit that is more comfortable than the bulk suggests. The 120-click unidirectional bezel — firm, precise, and satisfying in action — is wide in proportion to the case, giving the watch its chunky, bold character. The domed sapphire crystal adds height but also visual depth. The exhibition caseback shows a decorated Landeron movement with blued screws and engine-turned surfaces that are well above what the price point demands. This is a watch that looks like something from a much larger brand, costs considerably less, and is limited to 100 pieces.

The HydriumX "The Judge" is powered by the Swiss Landeron automatic movement — a no-date calibre based on the ETA 2824 architecture, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a power reserve of 40 hours.
