WHAT WE LOVE:
Ikepod was founded in 1994 by Marc Newson — the Australian industrial designer who would go on to design the interior of Air Force One, the interior of the Qantas A380, and eventually become part of Apple's product design team under Jony Ive. The original Ikepod watches were designed by Newson in the same period he was producing the Lockheed Lounge chair and the Pod of Drawers — objects that occupy a specific moment in late-twentieth century design history and that have only appreciated in significance since. When Ikepod was revived in the early 2020s, the design brief was unchanged: watches that look like nothing the rest of the industry is making, built to a specification that earns the design.
The Pod D008 "Midnight Blue" is one of those watches — and it is the most visually arresting of the Pod dial variants. The deep midnight blue dial occupies the full face of the lug-free pebble case with a completeness that only a two-hand design can achieve. No date window, no seconds subdial, no complications. Just hours and minutes against a deep, illuminated blue that shifts between near-black and a rich cobalt depending on the light source and angle.
This is a watch built around the principle that Newson's original design work was always built around: that the right form, executed with enough precision and confidence, needs nothing added to it. The 42mm case — which wears closer to 39mm on the wrist due to the absence of lugs and the domed undercase that curves into the wrist naturally — is the same fundamental architecture as every Ikepod. The bezel flows into the case sides without interruption, the strap tucks in under the case edge, and the result is a watch that sits against the wrist rather than sitting on it.
WHAT'S INSIDE:
The Pod D008 is powered by a Miyota quartz movement — a Japanese calibre of established reliability that Ikepod has specified for the Pod range because its slim profile enables the watch's low case height, and because its accuracy and low-maintenance character are entirely consistent with a watch designed around simplicity. The two-hand display — hours and minutes, nothing else — is a direct expression of that philosophy.
