WHAT WE LOVE:
The SBGE285G — known among collectors as the "Mist Flake" — is the watch that made many people reconsider what a modern GMT could look like. Introduced at Watches & Wonders 2022 as part of Grand Seiko's Evolution 9 Sport collection, it brought together the brand's most distinctive design language and its most exceptional movement technology in a package that manages to be simultaneously understated and extraordinary.
The dial is where it begins. The light grey snowflake-textured surface was inspired by the morning mist that settles across the mountains of Nagano in winter — the same region where Spring Drive was born, and where Grand Seiko's Shinshu Watch Studio continues to produce it.
The Evolution 9 case design represents a genuine evolution in Grand Seiko's architecture. The geometry is more dynamic, the Zaratsu-polished mirror facets more precisely integrated with the hairline-brushed surfaces, and the overall silhouette more contemporary without abandoning any of what makes Grand Seiko identifiable at a glance. At 41mm in high-intensity titanium, it sits closer to 120 grams on the wrist — remarkably light for a watch of this presence and capability.
WHAT'S INSIDE:
The SBGE285G is powered by Grand Seiko's Calibre 9R66 — a true GMT Spring Drive movement in which the local hour hand is independently adjustable in one-hour increments, allowing seamless time zone changes without disrupting the running of the movement. The GMT hand tracks a fixed second time zone, readable against the 24-hour scale on the case bezel.
The Calibre 9R66 comprises 30 jewels and delivers a 72-hour power reserve — three full days — with a power reserve indicator displayed between 7 and 8 o'clock on the dial. The movement is visible through the exhibition sapphire caseback, where it can be appreciated directly. Water resistance is rated to 100 metres, and the screw-down crown and caseback provide a robust seal appropriate for both travel and daily wear.
