WHAT WE LOVE:
Blancpain holds a claim that no other watch brand can make: the Fifty Fathoms, introduced in 1953, was the world's first purpose-built modern dive watch. The collaboration between Blancpain and French Navy commander Robert Maloubier produced a watch that defined the specifications — unidirectional rotating bezel, extended water resistance, luminous markers, automatic movement — that every dive watch produced since has followed. The 5015D-1140-52B is the watch that lineage produces when built without compromise in the current generation.
The blue sunburst guilloche dial is the defining detail of this reference. The fine guilloche pattern — engraved mechanically into the dial surface — gives the metallic blue a texture and depth that a plain lacquered or sunray surface cannot replicate. As light moves across it, the dial shifts between a deep saturated cobalt and a lighter, almost luminous mid-blue, creating the impression of water seen from different angles and depths. It is one of the most technically and aesthetically accomplished dial surfaces in the dive watch category, and it gives the 5015D-1140-52B an elegance that most 45mm dive watches cannot claim.
The sapphire-topped unidirectional bezel is the other defining feature of the modern Fifty Fathoms. Rather than an aluminium or ceramic insert, the timing scale is applied beneath a domed sapphire crystal that protects it from the scratching and fading that affects conventional bezel inserts. The luminous Arabic and index markings — reading in both directions from the 12 o'clock marker — remain legible and intact regardless of how the watch is worn. The crown guards, the brushed steel case with its clean lug architecture, and the blue sail-canvas strap with its folding clasp all contribute to a watch that looks as considered from every angle as it does from the front. This is a dive watch that makes no compromises on elegance, and no concessions on capability.

The 5015D-1140-52B is powered by Blancpain's in-house Calibre 1315 — a 35-jewel automatic movement of 227 components, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivering a power reserve of 120 hours through three stacked mainspring barrels. Five full days of autonomy from a single full wind is an exceptional specification even among high-end Swiss automatics, and means the Fifty Fathoms can be set aside for a working week and still be running accurately when retrieved.
