WHAT WE LOVE:
The IWC Portugieser Chronograph is one of the few truly iconic chronograph designs of the modern era — a watch that has remained essentially unchanged in its proportions and design language since its introduction precisely because it was right from the outset. The IW371615 in sunray green is the most striking configuration in the current collection, and the one that best demonstrates how confident the Portugieser silhouette really is.
The green dial is a genuine statement of character. IWC could have produced the Portugieser Chronograph in any number of conventional colours and sold every one — instead they chose to offer this configuration in a rich, light-reactive green sunray finish that shifts between deep forest and vivid emerald depending on the light source and angle. Against the slim, polished stainless steel case and the silvered leaf-shaped hands, the effect is immediately arresting. The applied Arabic numerals — generous in scale, perfectly spaced — are unmistakably Portugieser, referencing the marine chronometers and pocket watches that inspired the original 1930s design. The 30-minute counter at 12 o'clock and small seconds at 6 o'clock are arranged with the same clean symmetry that has defined the Portugieser Chronograph layout for decades.
At 41mm with a thin bezel that maximises dial presence within the case diameter, the IW371615 wears larger than its dimensions suggest — a deliberate quality of the Portugieser design since its earliest iterations. The black alligator strap with its IWC deployant buckle completes the watch with the kind of restraint the design demands: no bracelet, no metal, just the watch against the leather. This is the Portugieser at its most composed.
WHAT'S INSIDE:
The IW371615 is powered by IWC's in-house Calibre 69355 — a self-winding column-wheel chronograph movement developed and manufactured entirely by IWC at their Schaffhausen manufacture. Comprising 27 jewels and beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, it delivers a power reserve of 46 hours and drives a chronograph function with a large central seconds counter, a 30-minute counter at 12 o'clock, and a small running seconds sub-dial at 6 o'clock.
