Horology and Memories: An In-Depth Interview with Luke

Curious about who captures the stunning photos for our website?

Meet Luke, the talented photographer behind the lens. Since joining the 545 team in February 2020, Luke has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and kindness in our workplace. His dedication to his craft and his passion for watches have made him an invaluable member of our team. Learn insights into Lukes's passion for watches below.

Q - How do you approach building your watch collection? Are there specific criteria or considerations you follow when adding a new timepiece?

Yes, I ask myself, "Do I love it? Do I absolutely love it?" I just have to love it. Plus, my wife said I'm only allowed one watch box, so basically 10 watches. If I want a new one, I have to trade one out.

Q - What initially sparked your interest in watches, and how has that passion evolved over time?

I had Swatch watches when I was a kid, and then, as any young boy would, I watched Arnold Schwarzenegger in Commando and fell in love with his Seiko.

Q - What was your first watch?

My first real watch was a Zodiac Sea Dragon that, at the time, an acquaintance gave to me off his wrist. He has now become my watch guru, BFF, and fellow watch enthusiast.

Q - Watches often carry stories and memories. Do you have a particular watch with a memorable story attached to it? Could you share that story with us?

The first watch I fell in love with when I was working at 545 was the Hamilton FontainBleu. I love the history, design, and never thought I’d be lucky enough to own it.

Luke acquired it and wore it the day he proposed to his wife, so it will always have a special memory and will never be sold.

Q - If you could own any watch, regardless of cost or rarity, which one would it be, and why does it hold such significance for you?

I already own it! My grail watch is the IWC Big Ingenieur. It is the first luxury watch that I fell in love with. I love the movement, the Gerald Genta design. The Big Ingenieur is my ultimate watch.

Q - Watches often symbolize milestones or achievements in one's life. Can you share a watch in your collection that marks a significant moment or accomplishment for you?

The Big Ingenieur. I was following the watch market for three years hoping to find one, and at the same time I had some watches up for sale. They sold at the exact right time, which enabled me to aquire the watch.

Q - Finally, if you could travel back in time to witness the creation of any famous watch throughout history, which one would you choose, and what aspects of its creation do you find most intriguing or inspiring?

If I could travel back to any time, it would be the 60s and 70s design era.

Q - Is there a watch that reminds you of someone?

Yes, my dad gave me his 21st birthday watch, which is a Girard-Perregaux dress watch, 38mm (small for me), but I love it.

Q - A watch you would never purchase again?

The Seiko SKX. I absolutely love the watch, but it is just too small for me.

 Final note from Luke:

I feel very lucky to be involved in the watch industry, combining my two passions of photography and horology.

To conclude,

We thank Luke for his creativity and attention to detail to ensure that each timepiece is showcased in the best possible light, helping us share our love for horology with the world.
